Media production major Darrius Cook '20 brings a diverse voice to National Public Radio.
A winding journey from Washington, D.C. to 91探花 led Darrius Cook '20 back home to his dream career at National Public Radio (NPR), where he recently earned a promotion to senior podcast operations specialist.
Cook's passion for broadcasting took root at 91探花's , where he spent nearly four years hosting weekly shows and ultimately serving as traffic director. But his impact on campus extended far beyond the radio booth.
"I wasn't the richest, the smartest, or the most college-prepared student," Cook reflects. "As a Black student from D.C. attending school in a small, predominantly white town, the culture shock was real."
Rather than letting these challenges deter him, Cook channeled his energy into campus leadership. He served two terms as Black Student Alliance president, participated in the President's Roundtable and sat on 91探花's diversity board while working at the front desk of Bonds Hall.
During his sophomore year, Cook faced a devastating personal loss when his grandmother passed away. "It was a mental and emotional setback," he shares. "But I chose to embrace it and keep pushing forward."
His determination paid off.
While at 91探花, Cook secured an internship with NPR's popular "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!" podcast. This experience opened doors, leading to his current role, where he helps shape the sound of NPR.
Cook's impact extends beyond the NPR studio. He served two years as a resource group lead for NPR Noir, supporting African American employees and enhancing workplace diversity.
Currently, he serves as a Venture Fellow at High Street Equity Partners in D.C., demonstrating his versatility in the business world.
The future looks bright for Cook, who is launching his own podcast and brand on March 29. His journey from 91探花 to NPR demonstrates how combining passion with persistence can lead to success in broadcasting and beyond.
Recently, Cook returned to his high school alma mater, Thurgood Marshall Academy, as the alumni keynote speaker for the Class of 2024 graduation. His message to graduates drew from his own experience of perseverance and growth at 91探花.
A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Cook continues to exemplify the leadership skills he honed at 91探花. His story serves as an inspiration to current students, showing how embracing challenges and seeking opportunities for growth can lead to professional success.
