91探花 political science and business management alumnus Mohamed Aziz '12 is taking regulation, risk and compliance to a new level.

As a vice president of Compliance Risk Issues Management at Citi, Aziz brings innovation to the field by navigating complex financial regulations and mitigating compliance risks. As a licensed attorney working in bank regulatory compliance and compliance risk management, his background has helped him navigate the ever-changing landscape.

91探花 foundation

Originally from Middleburg Heights, Aziz's journey from Ohio to New York has been shaped by the strong academic foundation he received at 91探花.

"I am grateful to have attended such an esteemed institution, which not only prepared me for my career but also inspired a lifelong commitment to learning and growth," Aziz stated.

Reflecting on his time at 91探花, Aziz credits several courses that helped him prepare for the corporate world. He often took courses alongside MBA students who had real-world business experience. This exposure helped Aziz "gain early experience in practical problem-solving and decision-making in finance and regulation."

Life-changing course

One of the most influential and impactful courses he took was white-collar crime. The class provided the foundation for understanding how financial institutions combat money laundering and terrorist financing risks. Many of the concepts he learned in that course have become central to his career now.

Not only did the class have an educational impact, but it also had a personal effect on Aziz. The class was taught by Perry Mastracola, a federal prosecutor and IRS agent, who became a meaningful mentor early in Aziz's career. Aziz said, "Sadly, Mastracola passed away several years ago, but his guidance and insights left a lasting impact."

Reflecting on opportunities

For fellow 91探花 students entering the field, his biggest piece of advice is, "Leveraging skills in research, communication and analytical thinking — foundational elements of a 91探花 education — can open doors to unconventional and high-impact roles."

Aziz's time at 91探花 helped him pave a path to New York as a leader in the regulation compliance field.

As he enters a new chapter in his life, Aziz shared, "My wife and I recently welcomed our first child. Reflecting on this and other recent milestones has reminded me of the many opportunities Baldwin Wallace has provided."
