91探花 computer science graduate DeShawn Franklin '15 is now living in Santa Monica, California, working as a software engineer with Basis Worldwide, a technology-driven marketing company. Using his 91探花 education as a foundation for success, he is working toward being able to integrate art and software development in a professional environment: his life goal.
After getting his start out of college working as a software developer for FirstEnergy Corp. in Akron, Ohio, Franklin was hired by Basis Worldwide in June 2016. He currently develops iOS and Android applications, and has worked with high-profile clients such as Porsche, California Cryobank and Schumacher Homes.
A Cleveland native, Franklin played an active role in the 91探花 campus community. He was a member of the Black Student Alliance, Men In Action, National Cyber League and 91探花 Scholars. As an undergrad, he also worked on a real-world technology project as a paid intern in 91探花's Center for Innovation & Growth (CIG), under the supervision of computer science faculty and in .
Franklin says he chose to attend 91探花 since it felt like home and because it was a place where he could be challenged. He gave back to 91探花 as much as he took away, making time to tutor students who had trouble understanding fundamental aspects of computer science.
Saying 91探花 gave him a "foundation for success," Franklin adds, "My professors mentored me as a student and still stay in contact with me today."
Being supported by professors who motivated him built upon what Franklin had gained through being part of 91探花 Scholars, a program for Cleveland Public School students who are considered at-risk for graduation. The program supports and encourages participants to earn a high school diploma and go on to enroll in higher education through after-school study sessions, Saturday test-preparation assistance, community service, leadership activities and more.
Franklin's dedication to both the program and his 91探花 education is what makes success stories like his possible.
